This is true story as told by Katherine Fugate (writer of Army Wives) on her website...about Drew...thought I would share...
at matteo's, Drew Fuller, who plays Trevor LeBlanc in ARMY WIVES, kept text messaging and leaving the table during our dinner. inwardly i thought. yes, he's charming, cute. but rude, that boy. and oh yes, he's an actor. he'd return with stories of emergencies and film projects. then we'd talk again. our love of italy, traveling alone. sudden rainstorms and standing at the bar, drinking cappuccinos. i had introduced him to Rita LeBlanc, who is the co-owner of the New Orleans Saints and one of my close friends. thus, the naming of the lead character Roxy LeBlanc in the series.
thanks to that introduction, Drew had attended two Saints games, including the first playoff game at the Superdome, where the Saints won. he asked me about Rita -- and i told him the story of spending the night at Tom Benson's ranch in Texas, bouncing around in a Jeep in the front seat. i pointed out a big cow in the field and Tom slammed on the brakes and said, "Girl. that's a BULL. You gotta get out of L.A. more." that night, Rita talked all about the books she's read, the places she's seen, her years of hard work to educate herself to become the owner of a football team. at 27, she was more polished and more well rounded than i ever was. and she was still searching. Rita is a self-made girl.
then the waitress walked up with a big box and said, "katherine?" and i was so thrown. she said, "katherine! i brought you a King Cake for Mardi Gras." and i kept staring. my mind reeling. until the waitress said, "it's Rita!" and then i believed her. Drew said he will never forget my face. and i will never forget theirs. they wanted to surprise me. the plans started that day. the Saints had lost their bid to go to the Super Bowl. Rita needed a break, time to breathe. Drew mentioning he was seeing me for dinner. Rita wanting to meet my daughter. Drew wanting to unite two friends. the plane reservation, mighty expensive for same day booking, was still made. Drew was stalling the dinner, her flight was late. he told the maitre' d not to seat us. we waited an hour. the car, waiting at the airport to pick up Rita, needed to be notified she was late. he was up and down on the phone. she was in an airplane, flying with a large purple, green, and yellow pastry on her lap.
and there was Renee, pushing a stroller by the sand, saying, "you are one of the strongest women i know and i really admire you. i should tell you more often."
